Examination Guidelines
Overview
The examination has two modalities:
- Exam 1 and 2: in-class, paper-and-pencil written exam
- Final exam: oral exam
Exams 1 and 2
Format, Materials, Expectations
- You have 45 to 50 minutes for the Exams 1 and 2, and 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours for the Final Exam.
- Hard copies of the exam questions and problems are distributed in class.
- Bring pencils and erasers to write your answers and solutions.
- Write your name clearly, in capitals, at the top of the front page.
- Use clear handwriting to allow us to read what you write.
- You are not allowed to use your phone or laptop during the exam.
- Your phones are collected at the beginning of the exam on the table at the front of the class.
Learning Aid
As you prepare for the exam, we invite you to summarize main concepts and techniques, along with supportive examples of how to solve problems with programming in a hand-written, one sided page. This is what we call your learning aid.
- To prepare your learning aid, use a single sheet of US-letter size paper
- The learning aid has to be hand-written by you, not photocopies from other sources.
- Bring the learning aid to class to use it during the exam.
- All copies are collected at the end of the exam.

Any questions you have about the exam problems, please ask the instructor.
Academic Integrity
Note: No collaboration or exchanges related to the examination are allowed before, during, or after the exam.
- Using other resources than the learning aid during the exam constitutes cheating. Procedures for dealing with such a situation are described in the Academic Honesty Policy and in the syllabus.
- The penalty for cheating on the exam is zero credit for the examination.
Final Exam
- 15-min oral exam with the course instructor
- You’ll receive email communication about when and where your exam session is scheduled.
- If you are not arriving on time, you’ll have less time for the examination.
- You’ll demonstrate your knowledge and skills on the whiteboard.
- Exam questions/problems are similar to the questions/problems in Exam 1 and Exam 2.
- Preparation resources include:
- Hardcopy with practice questions/problems distributed prior to Exam 2
- Labs and homework assignments
- Runestone textbook questions/problems
- Course slides questions/problems/example
